“Computers are incredibly fast, accurate, and stupid. Human beings are incredibly slow, inaccurate, and brilliant. Together they are powerful beyond imagination.”

Intent
At Stallingborough CE Primary School, our Computing curriculum is designed to help every child FLOURISH in a digital world. Through building strong Foundations, showing Love and respect in online interactions, providing rich Opportunities to explore technology, celebrating each child’s Unique strengths, staying Rooted in our Christian values, ensuring learning is truly Inclusive, and helping pupils become confident and Happy digital citizens, we aim to prepare children for life in an increasingly technological society.
We follow the Kapow Primary Computing scheme, which provides a clear and progressive curriculum built around the three strands of computing: Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy. Kapow ensures that pupils revisit and deepen key concepts over time, developing secure knowledge and practical skills that grow year on year.
Through this curriculum, pupils learn to understand how digital systems work, how to create and debug programs, and how to use a range of software confidently and creatively. They develop the ability to think logically, solve problems and make decisions—skills that support learning across the curriculum and beyond.
A key part of our intent is to ensure pupils become safe, responsible and respectful users of technology. Online safety is woven throughout the Kapow curriculum and supported by our wider safeguarding approach, helping pupils understand how to protect themselves and others online.
Our vision of “Sowing the seeds so all can flourish” underpins our approach to computing. We want children to feel confident exploring technology, to develop curiosity and creativity, and to recognise the positive role digital tools can play in learning, communication and everyday life. By providing engaging, inclusive and hands on experiences, we aim to nurture pupils who are ready to participate fully and safely in the digital world.
Our Computing curriculum aims to develop pupils who:
• Build strong Foundations in computational thinking and digital skills.
• Use technology with confidence, creativity and purpose.
• Understand how computers and networks function.
• Can design, write and debug simple programs.
• Use a range of software to create, organise and present information.
• Stay safe online and make responsible choices in digital spaces.
• Work collaboratively, showing Love, respect and responsibility.
• Feel Included, valued and able to succeed regardless of starting point.
Implementation
Our Computing curriculum is delivered through the Kapow Primary scheme, which provides a clear, well sequenced and ambitious programme of study. Kapow ensures full coverage of the National Curriculum and supports pupils in developing secure knowledge and skills across the three strands of computing: Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy. Learning is carefully structured so that key concepts are revisited, built upon and deepened over time, helping pupils develop strong foundations and grow in confidence.
How learning is organised
Kapow’s curriculum is organised into five key areas that spiral through the year groups:
• Computing systems and networks — understanding how digital systems work and how information is transferred.
• Programming — developing logical thinking, problem solving and coding skills.
• Creating media — using digital tools to design, create and present content.
• Data handling — collecting, analysing and presenting data.
• Online safety — learning how to stay safe, respectful and responsible online.
Each area is revisited regularly, allowing pupils to strengthen prior learning, make connections and apply their understanding in increasingly sophisticated ways.
How lessons are taught
Kapow lessons follow a consistent structure that supports high quality teaching and learning:
• Teacher modelling and clear explanations to introduce new concepts.
• Practical, hands on tasks using a range of devices and software.
• Opportunities for exploration and experimentation, encouraging creativity and independence.
• Collaborative activities that develop communication, teamwork and problem solving.
• Retrieval practice to strengthen long term memory and build secure knowledge.
This approach ensures that all pupils—including those with SEND—can access learning and feel included, valued and able to succeed.
Online safety
Online safety is woven throughout the Kapow curriculum and supported by dedicated lessons each year. Pupils learn how to:
• Keep personal information safe
• Communicate respectfully online
• Recognise risks and know what to do if they feel unsure
• Understand their digital footprint
• Make responsible choices when using technology
This supports our commitment to helping pupils become safe, responsible and respectful digital citizens.
How computing supports our FLOURISH vision
Through engaging, inclusive and practical computing experiences, pupils:
• Build strong Foundations in digital skills
• Show Love and respect in online interactions
• Access Opportunities to explore technology creatively
• Develop their Unique strengths and interests
• Stay Rooted in values that guide safe and responsible use
• Learn in an Inclusive environment where everyone can succeed
• Become confident, curious and Happy digital learners
Wider opportunities
Computing is enriched through cross curricular links, digital tools used across subjects, and opportunities to apply skills in real contexts—for example, creating media for school events, using data in science, or presenting information in topic work.
Impact
Our Computing curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils leave Stallingborough as confident, responsible and creative digital learners who can FLOURISH in an ever changing technological world. Pupils develop strong Foundations in computational thinking, experience Opportunities to use technology purposefully, grow in confidence as Unique problem solvers, and learn to behave safely and respectfully online in ways that reflect our Rooted Christian values. We ensure learning is fully Inclusive, enabling every child to feel capable, confident and Happy using technology.
How we measure impact
Formative assessment is embedded throughout Kapow lessons. Teachers use questioning, retrieval practice and practical tasks to check understanding in real time. This allows them to adapt teaching, address misconceptions quickly and ensure all pupils make secure progress.
Summative assessment takes place at the end of each unit through Kapow’s Assessment Quiz and final task. These help teachers evaluate how well pupils have retained key knowledge, vocabulary and skills, and how confidently they can apply them in programming, media creation, data handling and digital literacy.
Teachers use both types of assessment to track progress across the year, identify gaps and ensure learning builds progressively from EYFS to Year 6.
What successful impact looks like
• Pupils talk confidently about computing and enjoy using technology.
• They can explain how digital systems work and apply computational thinking to solve problems.
• They write, test and debug simple programs with increasing independence.
• They use a range of digital tools to create, organise and present information effectively.
• They understand how to stay safe online and make responsible choices in digital spaces.
• They use accurate computing vocabulary and can reflect on their learning.
• They show resilience, teamwork and creativity when tackling computing challenges.
• They make good progress from their individual starting points and feel included and supported.
Wider impact
Pupils apply their computing skills across the curriculum—using digital tools in writing, maths, science, art and topic work. They develop confidence that prepares them for the next stage of education and for life in a digital world.
